Winter Turf Fertiliser: Why Liquid Iron and Low N Feeds Beat Granules

November 3rd 2026

From November onwards, sports pitches and golf courses carry on hosting play on turf that has almost stopped growing. Feeding through winter is about keeping grass healthy and coloured without pushing the soft growth that invites disease. Choosing a liquid winter turf fertiliser over a granular one gives turf managers far more control over how that happens.

Why Winter Is Hard on Sports Turf

Once soil temperatures fall below around 6°C, grass growth slows to a crawl and recovery from wear takes much longer. Frost, waterlogging, and constant foot traffic all add stress at the point the plant has the least capacity to repair itself. Diseases such as Microdochium patch thrive in cool, damp conditions, particularly where turf has been given too much nitrogen late in the year. A winter feeding plan needs to strengthen the plant rather than force it to grow.

The Case for Low N Fertilisers in Winter

High nitrogen feeds produce lush, soft leaf that is more open to disease and quickly damaged by play. Low N fertilisers give the grass enough nutrition to hold its colour and keep ticking over, without the flush of growth. Pairing that light touch of nitrogen with iron and magnesium hardens the leaf and helps the turf stand up to cold weather and heavy use.

Why Use Liquids Instead of Granules

Granular fertilisers rely on moisture and soil activity to break down and release their nutrients. In cold soils that release becomes slow and unpredictable, and heavy rain can wash nutrients away before the grass takes them up. Granules can also be picked up on boots and mowers, or sit visibly on the surface of a fine golf green.

Liquid feeds are absorbed through the leaf as well as the roots, so the plant can use the nutrition within hours, even when root activity is low. Rates can be kept small and precise, which suits the little and often approach that works best over winter. Applying through a sprayer gives even coverage with no surface residue, and the pitch or green can go straight back into use.

Fielder N-Green for Winter Hardiness

Fielder N-Green was developed for customers who wanted their turf to come through winter robust and green. It supplies the key nutrients and a measured amount of nitrogen for healthy growth in the wet, colder months, with a generous 4% iron inclusion to help the plant withstand pathogen attack. Iron and magnesium help the turf cope with low temperatures and waterlogging, whilst stronger roots keep the playing surface stable. The result is turf that stays green through the harsh months and is primed for spring growth.

Fielder Green for Colour and Recovery

Fielder Green combines iron and magnesium with our biostimulant mix and ascophyllum nodosum seaweed. It gives a rapid greening effect and stiffer leaf blades, and aids deeper rooting so turf recovers faster from poor weather and over-use. Because it improves the efficiency of fertiliser uptake, less product is needed overall, and the iron and magnesium can help reduce nutrient run-off from the soil.
